SquAshes 2026
Twas the 12th night, but it was also the inaugural Squash Ashes (SquAshes) competition, the brain child (not love child) of Max Ball and Pete Morgans, held on the 6th January 2026, a full friendly but competitive event between the Shrewsbury Squash club and the Shropshire Squash club.
A 20v20 player line up, best of 3, the winning team with the most game wins take the Ashes home for the year, only to be rechallenged in 12 months’ time.
The SquAshes are born
Unlike the Cricket Ashes where the wickets were rumoured to be burnt in disgust over a loss by England to Australia way back and subsequently held annually thereafter. (Or the more savvy amongst us will know the truth is much more sinister as recounted by Douglas Adams in the Krikket wars…)
These Squ’Ashes however were the result of the burning of 2 classic rackets to symbolise what we all hope to be the prize to be won for many years to come.

2026 Tournament
The event kicked off at 6.30pm at Shrewsbury Squash club with a great line up from both clubs’ players boasting a solid line up of the clubs, beginners, intermediates and seasoned players.
The first 4 matches were close trading points and games. But it wasn’t until match 9 when Shropshire had a healthy 6-3 advantage and by the mid way point Shropshire were up at 6-4, but then Shrewsbury’s big guns came to life winning 7 of the last 10 matches, and an 11-9 win to take the coveted prize
